When I was living in Washington, DC; I had a friend who had been a makeup artist/hair stylist for Aveda in a past life. For a bottle of the booze of his choice, he would head over to my apartment and give me the best cut in town. Once, just for fun, he also gave me a makeover using my own makeup. The makeover… was not quite the best in town. But, I can still hear his voice echoing in my head. A pet peeve of his was when people referred to lip pencil as "lip liner" as the term implied it should only be used around the perimeter of your kisser.
As a result of his lecturing, I began a love affair with lip pencils that lasted for years. As a matter of fact, in the late 90s I would generally wear ONLY lip pencil. Why not? It’s long-lasting without being dry. A more modern-day usage would be to use it as a base for a gloss, which is exactly how I’ve been using MAC’s Cremestick Liner in Sublime Culture. This slightly-darker-than-naked lip pencil applies smoothly, allowing for accurate lining. Its creamy formula allows for quick all-over lip application. I apply the pale gloss of my choice on top of it, and when the gloss wears off the lip-liner color still remains, ensuring that I have color for hours.
This creamy lip pencil is retractable, and also serves traditional "lip liner" uses well. It prevents feathering and bleeding of darker lipstick shades, and it’s nearly nude shade insures you’ll never have the dreaded dark-liner pale-lip combo that some unwittingly sport after their morning coffee.
