The Smoky Eye: Redefined

Bella Il Fiore is a line I’ve been recently introduced to… but I feel like I’ve been reunited with an old friend. The colors selected by founder Jennifer Maloy for the Princess Palette are perfect to create an edgy purple smoky eye. Following her instruction even made a amateur like me apply this shadow like a pro.

Only the most daring need apply to the club of David Scott’s Ebony Matte shadow wearers. This silky formula is black as coal and wears for an eternity… perfect to achieve the borderline-goth intense smoky eye that would blend effortlessly in the clubs of LA and New York… Suburbanites like me are equally devoted, but stick to using it as a lush black eyeliner. David’s collection will be available soon at his David Scott Cosmetics website. This Ebony Matte shadow will retail for $27.95.

For the budget-oriented smoky eye fan, ELF offers this terrific kit of everything you’ll need to apply a deep, dark smoky eye. ELF’s brightening eye color quad in "Drama" contains a deep dark black, two shades of cool gray, and one white highlighting eyeshadow. This kit also contains mascara, a black eye pencil, a smudging brush, and an eyelash curler. The Smokey Eyes kit retails for only $5 at Eyes Lips Face.

Shadow primer is a must to prevent creasing, and to keep shadow in place. I’ve reviewed Urban Decay’s Primer Potion in the past, and highly recommend it as the beginning of your smoky eye application process. This sheer formula will ensure your eyes look as good at the end of the evening as they did at the beginning. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion retails for $15 at Sephora.

I had the honor of previewing these palettes recently, and I’m still giddy. Lola’s new "Joy" laptop colors are a collection of metallic shadows, a brick red gloss and a clear gloss with a golden shimmer. I applied each shadow in a haphazard manner to test the colors and was floored that despite my imprecision I still looked holiday-party ready. The shadows are extremely high-pigment, and glide smoothly onto the lid. The gloss shade is an excellent compliment to the eye color: a decadent brick red that can also be applied lightly to look more like a stain. Top it off with the golden shimmer gloss for show-stopping New Years Eve lips.

Drugstore Chic – Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips

Physician’s Formula certainly hit the nail on the head with their new summer product, Shimmer Strips. This 6-color square blush combines highlighter, blush and bronzer into one product. Similar to Cargo’s BeachBlush, the striped style enables you to easily use this product as an eyeshadow too! I’m loving the highlighter in the inner corners of the eye, and under the browbone.

Drugstore Chic- Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Fluid Powder Eye Shadow

I tend to be a beauty snob… drooling over high-end luxe product and "glossing" (pardon the pun) over the less expensive but equally fabulous drugstore options. No more! I’m turning over a new leaf and introducing a new feature on Raging Rouge. "Drugstore Chic" posts will review the brands we can buy 24 hours a day at our local drugstore, with ever-accessible price points.

I recently sampled Physicians Formula Mineral Fluid Powder Eye Shadow in Amethyst. The handy mascara-style tube houses a wand with a sponge-tip, to sweep the slightly damp powder onto your lids. Thinking through every eventuality, the Physicians Formula team even attached a small mirror to the back of the bottle for precise application on the go.

The color applies in a thin wash, but is easily be layered for a more dramatic effect. Personally, I loved the subtlety of this eyeshadow, and have been using it on my lids to add some interest to a neutral eye palette. The lavender color is a gorgeous compliment for a brown-eyed brunette!

For those with other colors in mind… Physicians Formula offers six shades: Sand Stone, Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Plum Garnet, Brown Stone and Taupaz.

Pout Miami Beach Compact

If you have yet to try any products by Pout, be sure to snag the Miami Beach Compact before the summer ends! This bronze compact is covered with images of shady palms and hibiscus, and contains a palette of two cream-based cheek colors and two lip polishes. Pout refers to this limited edition compact as the “ultimate sexy summer accessory” and I must say I agree! What product is cooler to carry than this beautiful compact, or more convenient? It’s 3″ diameter makes it back-pocket portable!

The bronze cheek color imparts a sun-kissed glow, and the pink shimmer cheek color makes the cheeks rosy with a “just played volleyball on the beach with the boys” pink. The glosses are two different shades of pink, suitable for any complexion, and easily blended together to create a color all your own. The mirror inside is definitely large enough for pool-side application!
