Jake Bailey, MAX Factor Celebrity Makeup Artist
Hello fearless readers! Today we have a special treat… We’re wrapping up our week of MAX Factor reviews with Spring tips and trips from Jake Bailey, MAX Factor’s Celebrity Makeup Artist. Enjoy! (And yes… that was Jake you spotted cheek-to-cheek with Angelina Jolie in Bazaar’s April issue, on page 174!)
Q: Do you see pastels becoming a big trend for spring?
A: Yes, I do see pastels continuing to be a big trend. Pastel hues are a wearable form of color that every woman can achieve. I just worked on Kyra Sedgwick for the SAG awards where I used Vivid Impact Eye Shadows in Peach Basket. The shadow has a pale pink end and it really had just enough sparkle to brighten up Kyra’s eyes. The subtle shade is perfect for transitioning your look into the spring months.
Q: What do you want to see become a big trend this spring?
A: I would love to see women wearing more blush this spring. Blush can be a little intimidating as some women do not how to apply or the correct shade to pick. MAX Factor just launched ColorGenius Blush and each compact (either Roses, Peaches or Spices) has three shades in it that allows you to mix and create your own look. Use a blush brush to apply the color to the apples of the cheeks while blending up towards the temples and a dab of clear gloss on the lips and you are go to go! The blush will instantly warm up your skin after a long winter.
I also would love to see lots of color this spring. I just created Paris’ 80’s birthday bash look where we used lots of color in a very modern way. Paris looked stunning and the look is something every woman can wear. We used Paris’ favorite shades of MAX Factor’s Vivid Impact Highlighting Mascara, Vivid Impact Eye Shadows and MAXalicious Glaze Lip Gloss. The great thing about all of these products is that they can all be found at your local Wal-Mart!
Q: What looks should we keep for spring? o For spring, we should definitely keep the classic red lip and smoky eye but updating it for the warm spring days. To update this look and keep it lighter for spring, I suggest trying MAXalicious Glaze Lip Gloss in Secret Rendezvous. The shade is universally flattering and is so easy to reapply when you are on the go.
A: I love creating a sexy, smoky eye for my clients, such as Juliann Hough, but I try to use different shades to create the drama rather than black and grays. I have recently been using MAXeye Liner in Green and Bare It, which is an olive green eye liner, as well as Guilt Complex, which is a coppery brown hued liner to create a long-lasting smoky eye. Just apply the liner over the entire eye lid, as well as under the lower lash line, and smudge with your index finger for a softer look. You can use any shade to create a smoky eye so get imaginative!
Q: What looks should we ditch for spring?
A: The look women should definitely be ditching for spring is over-filled eye brows. Yes, we need to fill in our eye brows to better frame our face but I have been seeing a lot of severe brows out there. Use cool and complimenting shades of brow powder rather than brow pencils to fill in sparse areas.
I have also been seeing some clumpy lashes out there, ladies! Make sure you pick the correct formula of mascara as well as the correct brush. I suggest using MAX Factor’s Volume Couture Mascara because of the patented plastic bristles of the iFX brush because it doesn’t clump!

Drugstore Chic: MAX Factor Vivid Impact Mascara
This review was originally published on 12/14, but is being published again in honor of the MAX Factor May Makeover giveaway!
I suppose in a world where multi-dimensional hair color is so popular, it should only come to follow that this beauty trick would be applied to the lashes as well.
I recently had the opportunity to sample MAX Factor’s new Vivid Impact Mascara, a creative new way to enhance your lashes. This mascara is double ended. One end contains the base coat, used to add volume and length to lashes. But it’s the highlighting topcoat that is revolutionary. The topcoat adds highlight and dimension to the base color. I sampled the shade "Blushing Blue" (pictured at far left) with a deep blue base coat and a pink (yes… pink!) topcoat. The pink highlight mascara mixed with the blue base to create a gorgeous mix of blue and purple lashes, with a tiny amount of pink highlights on the ends. The look was absolutely stunning, and so perfect for any chic party you’ll be attending this holiday season!
Another product perk… the applicator brush used in MAX Factor’s Vivid Impact Highlighting Mascara is designed to prevent clumping, and does so beautifully.
Not feeling so bold? You can always use the base-coat alone. But personally, I found the look subtle enough to wear in broad daylight. The highlights are as subtle or in-your-face as you want them to be! Check out this mascara at drugstore.com.
MAX Factor Celebrity Makeup Artist Jake Bailey – clients include Paris Hilton, Jessica Alba, Kyra Sedgwick and Amy Adams – provided the following application and wearability tips. Since this is a more specialized product, you may prefer this mascara for the holidays or a special night out rather than as an everyday staple product.

MAX Factor ColorGenius Blush And Pressed Powder
MAX Factor’s new ColorGenius Blush and Pressed Powder were introduced to the public during Spring/Summer 2008 Fashion Week in NYC.
MAX Factor’s ColorGenius Pressed Powder produces a gorgeous translucent finish, with a slight mattifying effect. Like a nude bullseye, this pressed powder combines three different shades. Mineral ingredients provide sheer coverage and even the skin tone. Three shades are available: light, medium and deep. The formula is oil-free and hypoallergenic!
MAX Factor’s ColorGenius Blush is a mineral-based cheek color with three varying shades of the same color to create 6 different possible color combinations. Contouring, highlighting or all-over face color is available in one compact! Three color families to choose from: roses, peaches and spices.
Both products retail for roughly $8.49, and can be found at drugstores.

MAX Factor Vivid Impact Eyeshadow Duos
You may remember my rave review of MAX Factor Vivid Impact Dual Color Highlighting Mascara (and if you don’t… it will be republished later this week). I must admit, I’m equally smitten with MAX Factor’s double-ended Vivid Impact Eye Shadow. What better season than Spring to introduce some color to your makeup routine?
MAX Factor’s Vivid Impact shadow, introduced in January 2008, is available in pairs of vibrant color, each perfectly matched and named oh-so-cleverly. The formula is amazingly blendable and long lasting. It’s mineral-based, hypoallergenic and opthalmologically tested.
But I confess, my favorite thing about this shadow is the stubby cone-shaped applicator sponge. Each side of this wand has its own applicator, and it makes precise application a snap, even for those with less than steady hands. Need to line the eyes? No problem! Pinpoint precision is easy. Just tap off excess loose powder, then gently line your eyes. Need the perfect crease application? Crease application can be tricky for the best of us, but this applicator makes it simple to trace the crease of your eye. It’s as if you’re using a marker! Just follow up with some finger-blending to soften the look.
Retail price is $8.99, but you can snag this product at drugstore.com for $7.22 at the time I’m writing this!
Colors combinations available include: Brassy Berry, Irish Coffee, Peach Basket, Pink Cloud, Moody Mint, Smokin’ Rose, Two Cents, Domino Effect, Emerald Coast and Sultry Sage.
