Two beauty heavy-hitters recently launched makeup removers that require no rinsing. MAC has introduced Mineralize Charged Water Cleanser, and NARS launched Makeup Removing Water. How do these liquid makeup removers work? Think of favorite liquid eye makeup remover, and imagine using it all over your face. That’s it in a nutshell! Are these toners? NO! But those of us who abandoned the toner years ago can happily use this gentler alternative to mop up an oily t-zone.
NARS vs. MAC–Liquid Makeup Removers
These liquid makeup removers are intended to be used stand-alone. No water is necessary! When I put them to the test, I was astonished to see how incredibly effective they were.
To test out the performance of these new formulas, I applied foundation to my arm very thickly and let it dry (see above- yuck)! You can imagine how hard it would be for any cleanser to remove caked on foundation like this!
Finally, I used a single cotton pad soaked with each formula, and removed the foundation with two swipes. Above, you can see the results for yourself: NARS Makeup Removing Water is on the left in the image above, and MAC Mineralize Charged Water Cleanser is on the right.
I was astonished to see how effectively both formulas cut through this thick layer of makeup and removed all traces. Performance-wise, I’d have to say this is a solid tie. Forced to pick a favorite, I think the NARS formula might have a slight edge. Firstly, I felt the NARS formula dissolved the makeup faster, so the cotton pad slid over the skin gently. The MAC formula required a bit more tugging. Also–not to be too picky–but I prefer the container NARS Makeup Removing Water is in. The bottle is flexible and squeezable, making it easier to dispense the product. The MAC Mineralize Charged Water Cleanser comes in a firm bottle, and you have to shake it multiple times (almost like a salt shaker) over the cotton pad to apply.
Whichever you select, these liquide makeup removing formulas are excellent to carry with you on a camping trip or flight where you won’t be able to use a regular cleanser.
