This beauty blogger feels a bit like a proud mother writing a review about Urban Decay product. After all, I had the pleasure of witnessing the brand’s birth and gradual development into the fine, mature company we know and love today.
Urban Decay’s founder Sandy Lerner had her fingers resting solidly on the pulse of Generation X females when she founded the company with David Soward and Wende Zomnir in the mid 90s. Sandy knew that women weren’t just looking for cosmetics in shades of pink, but wanted their makeup to match the edgy, tough-as-nails casual fashion of the time. After all, we wore feminine long floral dresses, but we accessorized with Doc Marten combat boots… Urban Decay’s tough glam style appealed to us.
Designed to look like a subway token, Urban Decay Shadow is a wet/dry formulation that can be used as both a shadow and a liner. This product is pigment rich and easily blendable. This season, Urban Decay has introduced 6 new shades of eyeshadow, Flash, Jones, Stray Dog, Sellout, Toasted and Flipside. Three are neutral shades (Stray Dog, Toasted and Sellout) and three shades say, "I refuse to blend with the crowd" (Flash, Jones and Flipside).
I’ve used Sellout, Toasted and Stray Dog to create a beautiful neutral eye with just a bit of an edge. These metallic shades will look terrific this summer. Jones can be added to the mix from time to time to add an extra something special.
But, I am not the most creative with my makeup application. When I see funky colors like Flipside and Flash, I generally choose the boring way out and line my eyes with them, only adding a hint of the bold color. Knowing we may not all be talented and creative, Urban Decay’s makeup artists post tips on how to apply these colors right on their website. Here’s a link to their vision of how to apply Flipside and Jones. Here’s a link to an image of their application of Toasted and Stray Dog. The Urban Decay website acts as a veritable reference book of makeup possibility. Take advantage of the "love it or leave it" guarantee and sample these new fun shades. If you aren’t satisfied, you have 45 days to return them for a full refund.
Off-topic: Urban Decay never allows their product selection to become stale, constantly eliminating less popular items and replacing them with new and hip items. Check out their "RIP" section to snag former favorites before they are gone forever!
